Holding the Line

Image Archive Publication

2026

Holding the Line is an image archive publication that explores kites not only as toys, but as a cross-cultural icon of innovation and wonder. This archive was curated using 21 public domain digital archives and features imagery spanning centuries—from ancient woodblock prints to early aviation experiments.

The publication is designed as a flip-book, allowing the archival kite images on the right-hand pages to “take flight” as the reader moves through the book. Creating this animation in a print publication was particularly challenging as I had to meticulously map each image frame along an upward path to ensure a fluid sense of motion. The result is a tactile archive that captures the same upward pull and weightless wonder of a kite in the wind.
